Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the Amboseli National Parks is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”, and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close.
Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulfur springs, the savannah, and woodlands. They can also visit the local Maasai community who live around the park and experience their authentic culture.
Amboseli National Park is 390.26 sq. Km in size, hosting different wildlife species and other flora and fauna. The park was established in 1974 as a national park. It has a great history as one of the oldest protected areas in Kenya which were first established as a game reserve in 1906 before it was upgraded to the status of a national park. It was later in 1991 that the park was declared a UNESCO world heritage site so as to protect, preserve and conserve the different unique species at the park.

Amboseli National Park is located 226 miles from Nairobi city. Its located 450 KM from Mombasa, and can be accessed through the Kimana Gate or Iremito Gate on the Emali Loitoktok road. The park is located 140km from Nairobi via Namanga, Meshenani Gate.
Amboseli National Park is located south of Nairobi and west of Mombasa, easily accessed by both road and air. It’s 30 minutes flight from Nairobi and 5 hour’s drive from Nairobi. You can have a short flight from Nairobi to Amboseli with a scenic tour of Mt. Kilimanjaro on charter flights.

It has the highest number of elephants in Kenya and is known to be the place in Africa to see large herds of elephants.

The park also has a big number of bird species, giving birders a good time to spot and identify different bird species here.
